Combe Down House is a sensitive extension and reconfiguration of a semi-detached Victorian home in the Combe Down Conservation Area, within Bath’s World Heritage Site boundary. The project reconfigures the internal layout to improve spatial flow and functionality while respecting the building’s historic character.

A key intervention involves relocating the steep, narrow central staircase to the side of the house, enabling a generous open-plan living and dining space on the ground floor and the addition of an ensuite shower room to the master bedroom above. The works included extensive refurbishment throughout including the feature oak staircase, bespoke integrated joinery and fitted furniture, restoration of existing doors and windows, and new timber flooring to ground floor and landing.

The scheme retains the original building footprint and prioritises the reuse of existing materials, including reclaimed Bath stone, to ensure a low impact and sustainable intervention. A striking double-height feature window is introduced to bring abundant natural light into the reconfigured living spaces, enhancing the sense of openness and connection between floors. Carefully positioned fenestrations on the side elevation introduce additional daylight while safeguarding neighbour amenity.

The project enhances modern liveability with minimal impact on the building’s external appearance from the street, preserving the architectural integrity and character of the period home.”
