Stretto Architects worked in collaboration with UHBW and BAM Construction to reconfigure existing office and ward space across the Terrell Street Ward Block (Levels 7 & 8) and the Queens Building (Level 9) at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Delivered as a design and build project in two phases, the scheme provided essential additional inpatient accommodation and modernised support facilities to meet urgent healthcare demands.

Phase 1 converted open-plan office areas into new inpatient accommodation: a four-bed bay and single cubicle on Level 7, and four single cubicles on Level 8. Phase 2 added further single and four-bed bays, together with new support spaces including treatment rooms, staff rest areas, changing facilities, seminar rooms, ensuite and accessible facilities, and essential clinical support rooms. ITU Overnight Stay facilities were also relocated to Level 9 of the Queens Building.

The design prioritised patient privacy and dignity, with layouts developed in line with Department of Health guidance, HBN space standards, HTM Health Technical Memoranda, and Infection Prevention and Control requirements. New rooms repeat existing ward layouts to ensure familiarity and efficiency, while a calm palette of natural tones and carefully chosen finishes create a welcoming atmosphere that blends seamlessly with the existing design, maintaining continuity and a sense of harmony across the hospital.

Despite challenges from pandemic-related access restrictions and supply chain pressures, the phased programme was successfully delivered, providing an expanded, adaptable environment that enhances both patient care and staff wellbeing.

“This project demonstrates how existing space can be adapted quickly and seamlessly, delivering modern, flexible accommodation that meets the needs of patients and staff, while balancing functionality with dignity and care”
