We were commissioned to deliver the design for a major refurbishment at Weston General Hospital, one of the primary healthcare facilities serving North Somerset.

The project involved a complete strip-out and refurbishment, transforming and expanding the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) department. The redesign also introduced dedicated Paediatric Bays and a Resuscitation Area, all developed in full compliance with HTM/HBN standards.

Working closely with the clinical team, the enhanced SDEC department now doubles the unit’s capacity, enabling staff to treat more patients efficiently, improve care quality and patient experience, and reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.

Situated on the ground floor, the refurbished area retains the building’s external fabric, offering views of surrounding trees and greenery and allowing generous natural light—a rare feature in clinical environments.

The new Paediatric Bays and Resuscitation Area were purposefully designed to support critical care delivery while creating a welcoming and reassuring environment for young patients and their families.

“The new Weston SDEC has been designed with clinician input from the very beginning to ensure it truly meets the needs of our patients and the staff working there every day.” Charlotte King, Urgent Care Matron and SDEC Clinical Project Manager, UHBW
